The actor, best known for his role as George Jefferson in the hit series “The Jeffersons,” passed away on Tuesday in El Paso.
Hemsley first played Jefferson in “All in the Family” before his character got its own spinoff.
He later starred in the series “Amen.”
No cause of death has been given yet.
Hemsley was 74.

Hemsley gained national attention when he joined the Norman Lear show All in the Family in 1973; after two seasons, he became the star of his own spin-off, The Jeffersons, in which he co-starred with Isabel Sanford. Over the course of 11 seasons as George Jefferson, Hemsley starred in 253 episodes.
He would later go on to star in the show Amen, and later, voice a character in Dinosaurs.
