Of several strong candidates in the race, Mitch O'Farrell is best suited to meet these challenges. A former field deputy and senior advisor to Garcetti, he is articulate, tenacious and well versed on the district. He is highly regarded for his responsiveness and his ability to deliver service to residents and business. He has a firm understanding of the need for more affordable housing, and has called for a citywide blueprint to deal with the problem. He wants to revamp outdated zoning laws. He has specific proposals for cutting spending, including eliminating the Board of Public Works.

Pope Benedict XVl Announces He Will Resign on February 28th (VIDEO)

ROME -- Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday he will resign on February 28 as leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, saying he no longer has the strength to carry out his duties.

The 85-year-old announced his decision during an address, in Latin, at the "Concistory for the canonization of the martyrs of Otranto", a small event held early in the morning. 

The decision, which took even the Vatican hierarchy by surprise, makes him the first pope to resign since the Middle Ages.

His statement was posted on the Vatican Radio website.

Carrying out the duties of being pope required "both strength of mind and body," it said.

'Dear Abby" - Pauline Phillips - Dead at 94

She had a good long life...

"Dear Abby" columnist Pauline Phillips, who starting in 1956 under the pen name Abigail van Buren began giving some 90 million newspaper readers advice on everything from Civil Rights to dating, died Wednesday in Minneapolis, said a family spokesperson. She was 94.

"My mother leaves very big high heels to fill with a legacy of compassion, commitment and positive social change," said daughter Jeanne Phillips. "I will honor her memory every day by continuing this legacy."

For years Phillips had suffered with Alzheimer's disease, the first signs of which began showing in the mid-1990s. By then, she and Jeanne were writing the column together, until such time in 2002 that Pauline could no longer handle the task and Jeanne took over the family's advice business completely.

Among the many remarkable facts about Phillips (who took the name Abigail from the Bible and the surname from President Martin Van Buren) is that her identical twin sister, Esther "Eppie" Lederer, was in the same line of work – as columnist Ann Landers.
