1948 - Columbia Records unveiled its new "LONG-PLAYING" PHONOGRAPH RECORDS (LPs) in New York City.  The new disc turned at 33 1/3 revolutions per
minute, offering superior sound quality and fewer interruptions than 78 rpm records.

1967 - The JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE made their U.S. debut at the Monterey  Pop Festival.  At the end of their set, Jimi set his guitar on fire and became an overnight superstar.  He capitalized on the newfound fame by opening for THE MONKEES.

an auditorium at the University of Alabama to try to keep its two black students from
being able to get inside and register.

1979 - JOHN WAYNE died of the lung and stomach cancers at the age of 72.

1982 - "E.T.:  The Extra-Terrestrial" opened in theaters . . . starring a very young
